In december we already told you about the birth of cinema The history of cinema (part I). Today we will tell you about the development of sound and colour in the first films of the classical cinema era.
The era of classical cinema is a period of cinematographic history going from 1917 to 1963. It’s called classic because it’s a cinema genre that isn’t being made anymore. But modern cinema still uses classic cinema as an example.
The first example of classical cinema was Birth of a Nation, this film put together all the experiences of the first forms of cinema.
Another film which has made history is The Jazz Singer, the first sound film.
The first animated film (cartoon) with sound was Dinner Time by Van Beuren Studios. Walt Disney timiditate this film with Steamboat Willie, the first Mickey Mouse film.
Music also started to become an important part of the story. It changed from being a detail to a main ingredient of films.
The first European sound films were made in Germany, but the first successful European sound film was the English film Blackmail by Alfred Hitchcock.
In the 1930’s cinema became a means of propaganda (especially in Russia, Germany and Italy with the second World War about to start).
Colour was introduced in the 1930’s in America, the first colour film was Becky Sharp. It’s based on a book written by William Makepeace Thackeray.
